The Sartorial Striped Shirt

Striped shirts are one of the most underrated shirts in a mans wardrobe, the original name for a striped shirt was the Bengal striped, its got its name from the Bengal striped fabric which originated from the classic gingham weave, although now gingham is characterised by its plaid – or checked – weave, it started life in the Far East as stripes (it’s believed that ging-gang means ‘stripes’ in the Indonesian and Malay languages). So when this fabric started being shipped from Bengal, it made sense to name it after another of Bengal’s most famous exports, the Bengal tiger, since then there has been very many different stripes from pencil stripes to candy stripes, striped shirts are very vivid but stylish, in the early 20s Jazz players wore stylish striped coloured striped shirts, striped shirts became a stylish shirt for young stylish men all over the world, by the 60s came striped shirts became less fashionable.

In the 80s the striped shirt came back with a bang, bolder the strip sharper the shirt, by the mid 80s early 90s yuppies made the striped shirt apart of their wardrobe, it was all about power dressing red braces & slicked back hair, it was all about the money, the image of a sleazy yuppie put people off striped shirts all together, but striped shirts are back fresher and bolder more than ever.

Pencil striped shirts get their name from the very fine line you get with the fabric, they were worn mostly during the 20s, pencil striped shirts are more for business dress than casual dress,

The Long Sleeve Polo Shirt Part 2

We have already talked about how the essential stylish polo shirt came into being thanks to Renny Lacoste, but we didn’t touch on the long sleeve polo shirt it’s essentially the same as a short sleeve but it comes with a longer sleeves, original long sleeve style polo’s were knitted racing jerseys, but as fashion changes so does what people wear, over the last couple decades the long-sleeved polo shirt has become more fashionable, the long-sleeved polo is a stylish alternative to a shirt, it still has a collar and a buttoned placket on the front, they can be mixed with most pieces in your wardrobe.

Harley Davidson racing jersey

When the motor bike was invented racing clothing had not been invented, there was no such thing as leather biker jackets or even T-shirts, sportsman were still expected to dress smartly, so they had to have some thing made that still had a collar, the knitted racing jersey was invented it was a simple knitted jumper with a collar and a small placket, you can still find some examples but they are very rare now, over the next couple of decades better racing clothing appeared, people wore racing jerseys less and less, but once the modern polo shirt was invented people wanted more casual clothing more than ever, during the 50s Jazz singers were often seen in knitted polo shirts in vibrant colours and patterns, today you can get them in light stretched cotton or a rich cashmere.

Long sleeve polo shirts are a must for any stylish young man, they really come into their own during the cold months, people can still dress casually but keep warm, and if you wanted to dress up all you need is a stylish blazer and some indigo jeans, one of my favourite long sleeve polo’s is made by John Smedley Matthew in a fine merino wool, the key to wearing a stylish long sleeve polo is matching them with complementing stylish pieces.

For years Mods loved to wear stylish clothing, so when it came to stylish clothing the long sleeve polo was an automatic choice, most clubs had a dress code which was collar and tie, but with the onset of the fashionable long sleeve polo with it stylish collar and button placket, the rules were relaxed the long sleeve polo became the choice for all stylish Mods, matching them with a pair of stylish Relco Sta Pressed Trousers in a prince of Wales check pattern, will give you a stylish but classy look.

One Grey Suit = Three Different Looks

When it comes to the grey suit people don’t exploit it to its full value, you need to look at it as being a desirable piece, rather than merely a functional suit. the way that you do this is first invest into a good suit with a good fit, then using key piece`s from your wardrobe, a grey suit can be chic with bags of panache if you get the style right.

Now the grey suit has been around over 200 years, grey suits used to be used for morning suits, these days we don`t see enough people exploiting the full value of the suit, the first bit you need to get right is getting the right suit, for get about these super small super slim numbers, fashion changes style does not, invest into a proper two button medium grey suit, not to dark not to light, forget about man-made fibers they make your balls sweat, you want Wool, Mohair, Cashmere, these are natural fibers that keep you warm in winter cool in summer, also due to their waxy fibers they are very water absorbent.

Sourcing your suit can be expensive & time-consuming, two tips scour the sales & company’s discount sites, if you’re not sure about your size they don’t charge in shops for trying on suit`s, go in find your size & fit take a picture on your camera phone of the label, then hit the internet or sales stores.

How a suit fits is top priority, there are some simple key rules when buying a ready-made suit or off the peg to get a proper fit follow these rules.

1. Shoulders’ Because this is where the suit hangs, from the fit should sit on the shoulders, if there is any hunching it is to tight or to big.

2. Jacket closure’ if you get the shoulders right the jacket should close right, if you close the jacket and the front pulls on the button causing a big X on the front it’s too tight, if the lapels hang forward its to big.

3. Jacket sleeve’ When you put your jacket over your shirt sleeve ,there should be a half an inch between the shirt cuff and blazer sleeve, basically only 5 inches of cuff should be showing.

4. Jacket collar’ very easy to spot there will be a gap at the back of the collar, if it’s to big if it’s to small.

5. Jacket Length very simple stand tall put your arms down to the side, if the jackets below the hand its to long above to short.

6. The seat’ is your bum area, your trousers should just hang again if very loose to big too much hunching means to small.

7. Trouser break’ where your trouser end it is called the break, a proper fit will result in a simple dimple at the bottom, no dimple to short more than one dimple to long.

If you want to create a chic Italian style look with your grey suit, go for a black Roll-neck add a polka dot pocket square .

I_148499707_00_20110318 (1)FD290WHT_b_11123820-047-1606-154700001

If you have dinner date or you have to attend a business gathering, be stylish but super casual, wear a classy white dress shirt with some stunning cufflink`s to give your grey suit some major style points.

1380098112-96056800I_148499707_00_20110318 (1)

Turn your grey business suit into a party suit, if your going out after work you don`t need to take your wardrobe to work invest in to a casual classy shirt, grey is a neutral color, so adding a the likes of a Polka dot shirt really dresses up the suit most of all the wine color mixes well with the grey double bonus.

Get more out of you’re the grey suit, adding the right pieces to your wardrobe, turns your grey suit into a Swiss army knife, you have suit for work & pleasure,
