Sweaters are the most common form of knit wear that men buy, you can get them in a crew neck or V-neck, they come in many different materials like lambs wool or cashmere, styles range from plain knit, purl knit, even cable knit, style wise there are many amazing patterns to choose from but the classic has got to be Argyle pattern, its famous for being worn as a golf jumper, a lot of people ask me if they should wear crew neck with jeans or trousers, my rule of thumb is crew neck with jeans and V-neck with formal trousers.

Sleeveless sweaters also nick named tank tops are not as common as sweaters but they are still very stylish, you can get them in a crew or V-neck too, one of my favourite types of sleeveless jumpers are cricket knit wear in a stylish cream with a colour full knitted neck line, they are also stylish during the warmer months, they look stylish with trousers or jeans even chinos, they to also come in many different styles and fabrics, one of the best stylish looks with a sleeveless sweater is pairing it with tweed blazer in a V-neck.

Roll neck sweaters are one of my favourites they are also called turtle necks or polo neck sweaters, the origins are not quit clear where this design came from, but they have been worn by fishermen and the British navy, a roll-neck is essentially a sweater but with a close-fitting round high collar that folds over, they became stylish in France due to French philosophers wearing them, they became a hit in the US as a part of the preppy style amongst students, roll-necks became famous for bucking the trend where men went to restaurants wearing this item in stead of a tie, they also make the wearer look very masculine, you can wear a roll-neck for work and then afterwards slip on a blazer and make it look very dressy.

Shawl neck cardigans are very stylish they usually come in a heavy knit, they have been worn for years as stylish pieces, they were made famous by people like Steve McQueen, it gets its name from its collar that’s rolled with lapel that’s in all in one piece that curves from the back of the neck down to the front closure, they are essential during the winter months, there are many different styles & colours to choose from, the most common style is the cable knit with leather football buttons, the stylish shawl cardigan looks great with a oxford shirt and some indigo Levi`s 501s.

The V-neck cardigan is another type of knitted garment, it gets its name from a James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, he wore a knitted waistcoat during the Crimean war, a cardigan is like a sweater the only difference is it has an opening on the front usually with buttons but some have stylish toggles on the front, the cut and design creates a V-neck shape that’s very chic and stylish, they also come in many different materials and patterns, they are great for creating a sartorial layering effect. cardigans are more stylish in plain colours and patterns but you can choose what you want.

Charles Wilson Clothing

With knit wear you can choose many different types of wool from thick wool for cold months to light wool for the summer months, if you want some thing more luxuries you can get it.

Lambswool comes from seven months old lambs, they make very plush soft rich jumpers great for those chilly cold moths.

wpid-images-20.jpg.jpeg

Shetland wool comes from the Shetland Islands, its famous for its resilient slightly coarse-textured knit wear.

wpid-cashmere_wool.jpg

Cashmere wool is one of the most luxuries wools you can get, it comes from goats in the Himalayan mountains.

wpid-cashmere_fibre%2f_wool_fibre_%2f_raw_wool.jpg

Angora is another expensive wool it comes from rabbits the breed originated from France but are now bred in China.

So you now know what stylish knit wear is, and some of the major pieces you should have in your wardrobe, the question your now asking is what should I have in my wardrobe, to me you should have at least five pieces in your wardrobe and they are.

  • Two sweaters in a V-neck or crew neck the colours I would choose is medium grey and a navy both are neutral colours and would look good with jeans or trousers.
  • V-neck cardigan in a stylish black this is a great piece to wear to the office, and you can wear it under a blazer giving you a classy layering look.
  • A classy sleeveless sweater in a vivid colour like an electric purple, a tank can be worn with a oxford shirt then add some dressy chinos finished off with a bow tie you have the preppy look.
  • The final piece that you need is the stylish Shawl neck cardigan, they are truly the most stylish piece of knit wear ever invented, if you want to dress down, you simply wear a T-shirt and some indigo jeans add the shawl neck cardigan your looking stylish and dressed down.

Like with all clothing if you want to look stylish in your knit wear, you need to know how to mix it with your exciting wardrobe. so I’ve included some street style pictures to give you some ideas and food for thought.

Are You`re Socks Stylish !

Socks are one of the most overlooked items of clothing in a man`s wardrobe, I am a guy who always look at men’s socks, to me it shows if a guy has really taken time to think what he wearing on that day, some times a flashy pair of socks can really make your outfit sing, socks have been worn for thousands of years, the earliest socks would have been made from animal fur before man learned to knit.

Islamic_sock

These funky 12th century socks were found in Egypt

Once man learnt to knit they were able to create stunning socks, by the 1600s socks were very important dress for the nobility they would wear silk socks, where every day people wore simple wool socks, because socks were man-made each culture could personally put their own culture stamp on them and design,

In the old days boys went to school in shorts come winter or summer so they needed  knee-length socks to keep warm

By the 1900s nylon was invented and automated machines, so socks were made on a Industrial scale, with this socks became simple pieces taken for granted, but over the last couple of decades with fashion changing and people wanting to look good socks have become stylish pieces again.

Argyle pattern

The Argyle pattern is made of diamonds, the word is sometimes used to refer to an individual diamond in the design but more commonly refers to the overall pattern. Most argyle layouts contain layers of overlapping motifs, adding a sense of three-dimensionality, movement, and texture, the pattern comes from the tartan of Clan Campbell, it became stylish during the 20s, the Argyle pattern is stylish and gives you a unique look that’s bang on with the money.

Polka Dot pattern

Polka dot is a pattern consisting of an array of filled circles. early instances were generally equally sized and spaced relatively closely in relation to their diameters, many modern prints include more randomly spaced, sized and coloured dots, the key to wearing polka dot socks is choosing the pin dot polka dot pattern, polka dot socks were worn by jazz players and rhythm and blues bands, polka dots look great with grey flannel trousers.

imagesCJC1TQYB

Striped pattern

Striped pattern is made by having lengthier spans of color in the runs, causing distinctive striping patterns, strips were originally worn as sports socks, students would wear them at the university’s,  stripes are very sartorial you can have multi stripes or bold stripes, I don’t like socks with to many different stripes, I keep it simple by choosing socks with two bold colours like navy & red, yellow and navy blue, they look great with Indigo jeans.

untitledkjh

Plain Socks

Plain socks in a striking vivid colour is always a style winner, if you’re wearing a striped suit or checked trousers you need to keep your socks plain, for get the plain grey or black they belong to the bin of dull, you need to add classy colours like bold reds, light pinks, sky blue, electric purple.

Natural wool socks

Socks come in many materials most common is polyester but its manmade, so it cause your feet to sweat more as the material cant breath, wear wool or mohair they are natural materials, they keep your feet warm and cool naturally so your feet wont sweat as bad.

Now you know your different patterns its time to see how you can incorporate them into your every day wardrobe, to look good in stylish socks it’s all about matching colours and patterns to what you’re wearing.

The Argyle pattern may be hundreds of years old but it’s still stylish and very chic.

The Classic Gent`s Wool Suit

When you come to buy your first suit it will be one of the biggest decisions you will make, it could be because you’re getting married or you are about to start a new job, or you just need one for future occasions.

Wool has been used for Suits since the 1600’s, we know this because people kept a diary. Suits them self’s have not changed much just the design & the cut its still two garments made from the same material.

So Why Wool

I bet you want to know why l am banging on about wool. Well first it’s not man-made so you wont sweat your nuts off in the summer or freeze in the winter. Because wool is breathable material it circulates air so it keeps you cool in summer & warm in winter. If your caught out in the rain wool can hold 20% moisture due to its waxy fibers so it’s also water proof to a certain degree. Also if you were out on the town partying in a cheap suit & some body chucked sambuca all over you then set you on fire it would be good night Vienna for you, but a wool suit would just smolder.

Wool fabrics are made from worsted wool or woolen yarns so they can be blended with cotton or silk even cashmere also horrible man-made fibers. there are many different weaves, there is Hounds tooth a twill-weave with light & dark threads or Barley corn kind of blurry corn triangles twill-weave, my favorite is herringbone it’s a twill-weave with threads running alternately to the left, but the best is the pinstripe weave mostly seen in grey or navy blue, there are many more but the most common is called Gabardine, it’s a twill rib it comes in solid colors also very water-resistant too.

The Fit

How a suit fits is top priority, for get about super skinny super short, your buying a 100% pure wool suit, may be it’s not the latest fashion, l know we all want to look good, but a wool suit could last you 10 years or more, are you going to be super skinny in 10 years ?. Tailors don’t talk about of style or fit but of ‘LINE’ & OF ‘BALANCE’ which means the hang of jacket. Because of mass manufacturing & advertising of designer labels, people buy into what they see, but you should bear in mind, you are not some Italian love God called Ghugie Ghugie who looks good in every thing that appears in magazines. You are you so when your investing into a suit buy one that fits you properly. There are some simple key rules when buying a ready-made suit or off the peg to get a proper fit follow these rules.

1. Shoulders’ Because this is where the suit hangs, from the fit should sit on the shoulders if there is any hunching it is to tight or to big.

2. Jacket closure’ if you get the shoulders write the jacket should close writ, if you close the jacket and the front pulls on the button causing a big X on the front it’s too tight, if the lapels hang forward its to big

3. Jacket sleeve’ When you put your jacket over your shirt sleeve ,there should be a half an inch between the shirt cuff and blazer sleeve, basically only 5 inches of cuff should be showing.

4. Jacket collar’ very easy to spot there will be a gap at the back of the collar, if it’s to big if it’s to small.

5. Jacket Length very simple stand tall put your arms down to the side, if the jackets below the hand its to long above to short.

6. The seat’ is your bum area, your trousers should just hang again if very loose to big too much hunching means to small.

7. Trouser break’ where your trouser end it is called the break, a proper fit will result in a simple dimple at the bottom, no dimple to short more than one dimple to long.

The Look

Now we have talked about the fit, we know how to get the fit right, the next bit is the look of the suit, remember were buying a 100% wool suit fashion fads come & go, but the standard two button suit has never been out of fashion, at end the end of the day keep it simple & you won’t go wrong. Lapels go for a notch lapel its simple but classic, l always advise go for a two button jacket. remember were not going hunting, so no patch pockets go for slanted or straight pockets with flaps, twin vents are normally for blazers & a double vent is for suits it’s really up to you, the trousers should be a flat front keep it streamlined and the bottom of your trousers should be plain no turn ups etc.

The Color

Now we’ve talked about the different weaves that wool can come in, but the color of a suit is very important the rule is keep it simple, think where are you going to be wearing the suit, if don’t work in the dig city stay away from pinstripe, and don’t go for silly electric blues and purples you’re not a pimp, to me you have two choices go for a morning grey & navy blue they will look good at work a wedding or an evening out, l know you can have black but we wear black at sad times and charcoal is for accounts & nasty bankers & MP’s.

Sourcing your suit

Now sourcing your suit this is important, your looking for a 100% pure wool suit not prime Armani best skinny funky bad boy suit for a fiver,   But if you are a savvy shopper & don’t mind searching through Goole using long tale searches you will find what your looking for, look out for sales from top men`s stores this will be key in your search too.  The best place l got my two piece navy wool suit mixed with cashmere of course was from Marks & Spencer bless their cotton socks it should have been £300 but l got it for £140.00 & two years later it still looks good. So get on the net hit the streets and source out your pure wool suit.

This the wool trademark

This is the wool trademark

When you are looking for your suit look for the Wool mark, like the one above this it will be found on the label in the inside of the jacket, if it does not have one simply moonwalk out of there fast.

Press a wool only with steam or a damp cloth

Press a wool suit only with steam or a damp cloth

Takeing care of your suit

Wool suits like any thing get dirty & will need cleaning at some point, but wool does not like heat as it breaks down the fibers, so only clean your suit twice a year this is done by dry cleaning don’t be a skin flint and use a coined operated machine go to a proper professional dry cleaners. Your suit will need pressing from time to time, never put a hot iron on the wool hang the suit up & steam it so the creases drop out, or get a damp tea towel put it over the suit then light press with the iron. When you’re not using your suit stick it in a suit bag keeps Hungary moths away, and just give it a good brush before & after you have used it.

I hope this topic has opened your eyes & your wallet not every one is rich in today’s society there is a to much of a throw away attitude because things are so cheap but cheap does not last quality does save your money invest wisely and you will have a wardrobe fit for any occasion for a long time to come.
