To day l want to talk to you about men’s accessories you “know” belts, braces, wallets, cuff links, pocket squares, men’s accessories is big business now, there are independent retailers out there just selling accessories nothing else, so why is there a big demand for men’s accessories, its down to the choice of colors & designs, you can make a simple out fit into something very stylish, we can even personalize things like cuff links & wallets putting our own brand on them, if you asked young lads today what accessories they own, they would probably just say a simple wallet or a cheap belt nothing more. I’m hoping if l blog about what men’s accessories really are, more young stylish fashionista’s will be inspired to invest more into men’s accessories.
one of the oldest accessories around is the humble belt, it first started off in life as a piece of fabric, people could not afford proper clothing hundreds of years ago. They had a piece of fabric with a hole in the middle, it went over your head you tied the fabric around the middle hey presto you’re dressed, just like Rambo in first blood where he’s nearly buck naked he finds some fabric cuts a hole in the middle, he puts it over his head then gets some string, ties it around his waist, he’s ready to kick some arse, “the Rambo tramp clothing brand was born”, but soon man got trendy & the buckle was invented, the posh Gentlemen of the day could now afford a leather belt with a big money pouch hanging from it, as history progressed the belt became a must for all men basically your pants would fall down if you didn’t have one, in time other materials came into use like canvas which was cheaper, but today a lot of young lads like to flash their pants, with a belt you can make an outfit stand out, to me there is three types of belts you have the Jean’s belt its a thicker leather but with a thicker buckle you wear it with Jeans or chinos, a trouser belt is a smarter slimmer belt, with a smaller buckle yes you guessed right you wear it with trousers, then you have the canvas belt it can be worn with Jeans or trousers if in the right colours etc. , now I’m not asking you to buy belts for every outfit now no, but simply buy your self a good leather jeans belt for casual dress down days, then on work days or if you’re going to interview invest into a nice trouser belt, the rest is up to you keep it simple you can’t go wrong.
Men’s Braces/Suspenders have been around for 300 hundred years, they are a fabric strip that goes over your shoulders, they then attach to your trousers with leather piece’s that have buttonholes, they then attach to buttons on the inside of the trousers hem, or metal grip fasteners that grip to your trousers on the hem, the fabric usually crosses the back with a X or Y shape, they came into fashion because of high-waisted trousers, they fell out of favour at the same time as waistcoats became unfashionable, because waistcoats used to hide them, Braces/Suspenders have been in & out fashion ever since, but thanks to films like Wall Street & programs like Peaky Blinders, they keep coming back into fashion, There is no needed for them, but they can give your outfit a stylish twist if worn right, my advice go for a simple pair of metal grip ones in a simple colour, try the look, if you can pull it off, invest into a proper pair with leather piece’s attached then get some buttons put on the inside of your trousers and you will be proper dapper chap.
Now Neckties or just ties have been around since the Romans, but the tie as we know it today took its form in the 1800s, the tie has dominated men’s fashion ever since, but as times change so do young lads views, a tie to them is something they were forced to wear as part of their school uniform, so when they leave school they get rid of that dog collar, and finally they can become their own person, so ties fall out of favour only to be worn at work or a family get together, but using the right tie can make your outfit stylish go for knitted silk ties, they are less formal but very chic & go with most out fits even jeans, I would invest into a black & Burgundy one,
Bow ties have again been around for over 300 years they are just a different type of necktie that’s all, but bow ties are usually associated with geek’s & Mad scientist , but you’re so wrong bow ties are very chic, bow ties are a great addition to your Wardrobe, if anything they will give you suave look if worn right, there are two types of bow tie’s clip on one’s or self tie one’s, go for the self tie ones, learn to tie one you won’t regret it & as a man you should know how to do this, use YouTube there are plenty of videos to show you how, it took me three hours one night in front of a mirror, but l can do one in a taxi now with no mirror impressive hay, my advice is buy a clip on one if you like the look, then invest into a proper bow tie.
Handkerchiefs or pocket squares are one of my favourite mens accessories, it’s a simple square piece of cloth usually made from cotton or silk etc, but the key is they can come in amazing prints & colors which will bring your suit or blazer alive, a lot of young people think of handkerchiefs as something an old fat bloke puts on his head at the seaside, or some dandy chap skipping through the park, trust me if you wear a blazer or a suit without a pocket square, you might as well be invisible, it’s the pocket square that will get you the wow factor, start of with a plain one play with how you want it to look, there are hundred of ways to fold them, myself l like to bunch them up then stuff it in the front pocket, it’s trial & error my advice is get a look book together, ie download pictures of pocket square’s put them on pinterest, so you have some ideas you can go back to for inspiration.
Cuff links are another men’s accessories l love, you can get a pair for a couple of pounds or pay up to a thousand pounds, cuff links go back as far as the 1600s, normally worn on a double French cuff shirt, cufflinks are made from silver, gold, fabric, copper, brass, stone you name it you can get a pair made from it, cufflinks really took off in the early 19th century when men dressed for dinner, like anything they became less common, due to shirts been made with button single cuffs, eventually they were classed as men’s jewellery, men in high positions would wear cuff-links as a status of their wealth really, the everyday man stuck with the standard cuff, but again thanks to films & programs like Wall Street & Peaky Blinders, they become in vogue again, the only time a young lad might wear cuff links now is at his wedding, if you’re serious about dressing in style & you wear blazers etc., invest into a white dress shirt with double cuffs; then buy a snazzy pair of proper cuff-links, if you shop around you could get both for under £30.00, cufflinks come in many styles double – panel, swivel bar, links made from bright-colour fabric, to me stick with the swivel bar ones very simple to use.
Tie pins/bars is a simple stylish piece of men’s jewellery that keeps your ties in place. Hundreds of years ago men wore fancy frilly neck pieces, they needed to keep them in place, so pin brooches became fashionable with very big jewels & diamonds set in them, but again history moves forward, in the 50s men fashion got a lot more sharper, the tie bar became very stylish, sharp suited executives wore thin ties so a tie pin didn’t fit, Tie bars simply slide on or grip on to the tie, it then holds the tie against the shirt simple, but you get no pin holes in the tie, some people swear by tie pin/bars, to me if you want to make a statement, a simple tie bar mixed with the right tie speaks volumes for you & how you dress, again buying one is not expensive you can get one for under £10.00 go for a simple plain metal one first, if you like the look invest in more as you see fit, keep it simple you won’t go wrong.
So now you can see why men accessories make a simple outfit go from droll to wow, there are many more types of accessories, but we would be here all day talking about them, get the basics mastered first, then may be get some Button hole dressers for your suit or blazer, invest into a proper watch not a rubber cheap pants one, get some dapper socks, get a proper leather wallet with your initials embossed on to it, get a set of cufflinks engraved with your initials, the choices are endless at the end of the day, what lm giving you is food for thought, so as you grow your wardrobe you will invest Wisely into men’s accessories, they will then last you a lifetime so your investment will grow to.
