The Sartorial Striped Shirt

Striped shirts are one of the most underrated shirts in a mans wardrobe, the original name for a striped shirt was the Bengal striped, its got its name from the Bengal striped fabric which originated from the classic gingham weave, although now gingham is characterised by its plaid – or checked – weave, it started life in the Far East as stripes (it’s believed that ging-gang means ‘stripes’ in the Indonesian and Malay languages). So when this fabric started being shipped from Bengal, it made sense to name it after another of Bengal’s most famous exports, the Bengal tiger, since then there has been very many different stripes from pencil stripes to candy stripes, striped shirts are very vivid but stylish, in the early 20s Jazz players wore stylish striped coloured striped shirts, striped shirts became a stylish shirt for young stylish men all over the world, by the 60s came striped shirts became less fashionable.

Jazz Players from the 1920s

In the 80s the striped shirt came back with a bang, bolder the strip sharper the shirt, by the mid 80s early 90s yuppies made the striped shirt apart of their wardrobe, it was all about power dressing red braces & slicked back hair, it was all about the money, the image of a sleazy yuppie put people off striped shirts all together, but striped shirts are back fresher and bolder more than ever.

Pencil striped shirts get their name from the very fine line you get with the fabric, they were worn mostly during the 20s, pencil striped shirts are more for business dress than casual dress,

Weekend Travel Stylish Essentials

Its spring the long bank holidays are here that means yes “weekends” away, time to pack your weekend bag enjoy the sun and some beer, but if you’re hitting the beach you want to be looking good and stylish, it’s all about packing the right pieces that are practical but also essential, there are many times I’ve seen guys getting away for the weekend, and they are carrying too much kit, also if your going to fly to Europe you normally can only carry an on board bag, even then they check your case if you’re carrying too much aftershave they even take it off you, so you need to be smart and crafty what your carrying in your bag.

wpid-70007005_xxl.jpg

http://www.sportsdirect.com

The first thing you need is a stylish weekend bag, forget about those little trolley dolly cases you wheel behind you, get a proper man`s bag that’s stylish but most of all you can get your kit in it, the best type of bag is the classic holdall, they come in leather or other materials, a classic brown or black are the classy colours, the other benefit is they have a shoulder strap, which makes it easier to carry, don’t be a pussy and wheel your case behind you, be a man and carry your case you will look stylish and masculine, I’ve chosen this Kangol antique holdall,  because of its size and striking red and navy canvas stripe stylish design, it has three pockets, a shoulder strap and handles which makes this perfect for your weekend getaway.

10_PH9542-00_4YG_24

http://www.lacoste.com

The polo shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can pack for your weekend away, it looks great on the beach and if you’re hitting the clubs its bang on with the money, one of the best pieces is the Lacoste ultra slim polo shirt with tricolour piping on the collar and arm bands, it has a stylish button placket, its inspired and designed for the those weekends away.

wpid-673-982-x55s2.jpg

http://www.next.co.uk

Oxford shirts are often overlooked as some thing for the weekend, but oxford shirts look great with shorts or chinos, they are the classic playboy look on the beach matched with some snazzy Ray Ban sunglasses, with one oxford shirt you can get two outfits on a weekend end away, wear it on a night out then the next day wear it with a pair of shorts, it will be broken in a ruffled way but you will look very stylish, this oxford I’ve chosen is from Next, it’s a simple shirt made from real oxford fabric, with contrast trims and button down collar, but the good thing it only costs £20.00 not a king’s ransom.

wpid-shopping.jpg

http://www.joules.com

Weekends away are all about catching some rays dressing down, so every man needs some stylish shorts, for get about sports shorts they are ok for the pool, but when you’re hitting the beach side bars you want to look stylish, go for some chinos cotton shorts in a vivid summer colour, these Faxan shorts in a deep pink come from Joules, they are a smart alternative to chinos, but most of all they look stylish with a oxford shirt or polo shirt.

wpid-rustlinenmenclassic-10004858-h.jpg

http://www.toms.co.uk

When it comes to foot wear there are many different pieces to choose from, but for me its a pair of Toms Espardrilles, they slip on your feet like a pair of socks, they have a classic suede insole for comfort, a latex arch for added support, they come in a striking rust linen material, Toms even look stylish with jeans and a summer blazer, classy footwear for your weekend away.

wpid-280466_main.jpg

http://www.riverisland.com

Chinos are a must for any weekend away, great for city breaks or hitting the beach, chinos come in many colours but keep it classy go for a light tan or stone, also when you’re hitting the beach you can just roll up the legs and look stylish walking across  it, these chinos come from River Island in a slim fit in a stone colour, they have a classy button fly, they would look amazing with a blue oxford shirt.

wpid-shopping-1.jpg.jpeg

http://www.il2i.com

Another piece that would not go a miss is a classy straw Trilby, they are not just stylish but also very practical, if you’re sitting by a beach bar all day you need a little protection from the sun, with this Stetson Raffia straw Trilby that’s what you get, with its stylish navy grosgrain ribbon band you will look dapper and stylish.

wpid-31it0ggldcl._sy300_.jpg

As you now when you get your bags checked you run the risk of being told your carrying too much toiletry’s, and then you get told to hand over a bottle of aftershave that cost you £65.00 your going to feel pissed off, you then have to go to the duty-free shop to buy more, so even before you have started your holiday your over a hundred pound out-of-pocket, so invest into some travel aftershave atomiser`s, they are about the size of a lipstick case, you simply fill them with your favourite shave, pop them into your bag, and leave your favourite aftershave at home. your sorted also they fit in your pocket, so if you want to stay fresh all day your covered guys.

Where ever you decide to travel to this year do it in style, have fun enjoy the sun and stay safe on your  travels.

Desert Boots King Of Casual Footwear

Desert boots are the king of casual footwear, before desert boots came about there was no such thing as casual footwear, but all that changed when the desert boots came on the scene, during the second world war the British army went to fight in the desert, they were not properly equipped for the harsh climate, British officers saw locale people wearing a crepe sole shoe made from rough suede, very soon they were going to the local bazaars and getting some made for them self’s, one of those young officers was Nathan Clark he was a member of the family behind Clarks, one of the worlds most iconic shoe company’s, he decide to design his own desert boots, in 1944 while he was stationed in the desert he had some made at a Cairo bazaar, after the war he took his designs home with him, he went to the directors of the company and put his ideas to them, they said they would never sell, but Nathan believed in his design and started to cut the design him self, in 1949 Nathan Clark took his prototype boot to Oscar Schoeffler , fashion editor of Esquire, he decide to run a story on the new casual footwear with pictures, the desert boot was a hit, the rest as they is history.

wpid-nathan-clark-007.jpg

Nathan Clark the inventor of the modern Desert Boot

The desert boots became a hit over night , in 1957 they ran an advert saying the most travelled shoe, the desert boot became the first casual shoe, they ended up selling in over 100 country’s,  it was also named as one of the 50 shoes that changed the world, it was down to its unique design, before the 1950s all shoes or boots were made with leather uppers they were made to last so they could be heavy on the feet say after 8 hours at the mill, with Clarks desert boots they were made from a crepe sole, one of natures great shock absorbers and water-repellent, crepe is made from latex tapped from the para rubber tree, its then mixed and mashed and rolled into sheets, then layered to make a great a great comfortable sole, the best thing is it’s entirely natural not man-made. then covered in two pieces of the finest suede.

wpid-mcq.jpg

Steve McQueen wearing thick crepe sole desert boots in the film “Bullet”

Desert boots have been worn by all types of famous people, in the 60s Steve McQueen famously wore a pair of thick crepe sole desert boots in brown suede they looked amazing, the boots he wore were Hutton Original Playboys, they went bust in the 70s, they were sold in the states under the name of Players as Hugh Hefner of playboy didn’t like people using his company name “PLAYBOY”,  what made McQueen`s character stand out “Frank Bullet” he wore desert boots with a pair of charcoal trousers in the office, this was a revolution in its self, normally if people worked in an office they wore proper shoes, deserts boots were no longer just casual shoes but every day wear.

wpid-harry_312w_480_landscape.jpg

Even Prince Harry wears desert boots

Over the last couple of decades desert boots have still maintained a cult following, and have been worn by the likes of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, even Prim Minster`s, they became the foot wear of choice for the mods, the desert boots appeal was adopted by all types of people, that`s why it became such a style icon, the desert boots have been even copied by Marks and Spencer.

wpid-clarks-desert-boots-suede-6.jpg

http://www.clarks.co.uk

The great thing about desert boots is they go with most outfits, but its all about the colour that you choose, if you go for crazy reds and bright oranges your limited, but if you choose brown or sand even navy your better off, my favourite colour is cognac brown very rustic with a rich sheen to it, because most fashion labels and stores make their own desert boots now you can pick up a pair for around £20.00, but if you want the originals your looking around £65.00 a pair.

wpid-desert_boots_fashionspot.jpg

The other great thing about desert boots they are unsex so both boys and girls can look stylish too.

wpid-95b950e0e3bf80e0dc78e465c67a6150.jpg

With desert boots you know your able look smart even with jeans, they are very chic with an urban twist

wpid-desertboot.jpg

If your someone who has to wear a suit for work dress it down a touch with a pair a stylish desert boots

I’m a lover of the desert boots I own 5 pairs, they are super casual but practical, if your new to desert boots get a pair today you wont regret it, they will become your favourite shoes for ever.

Mixing Vintage With Modern Style

The Vintage look is fast becoming something that every stylish person is going for, in today’s society of throw away fashion, clothing and accessories are not made to the highest standard’s like they used to be, but with vintage pieces this is what you get, about a 10 to 20 years ago certain pieces like silk scarfs and cufflinks would cost you about £40 to £50 you now can pick them up for as little as £5.00, the thought of wearing some thing that some one else owned really puts people off going vintage, this I agree with but I’m not on about clothing I’m on about accessories, but now and then I invest into a vintage pucker blazer if I like it, when I visit  different  country’s I always hit the back street chunk stores, on one of my last European trips I went to Tallinn, in Estonia,  we found many shops selling vintage pieces, in one shop I brought a vintage razor and four pairs of cufflinks it cost me just £20.00, my friend Peter picked up a vintage Finnish navy style pea coat, it was an amazing find he wears it with some Levi`s and looks very stylish,   Key to the vintage look is how you incorporate it in to your every day wardrobe, if you just wore vintage pieces it would probably look like you have just raided your granddad wardrobe,  so what you need to do first is think what vintage pieces would look great with your wardrobe.

wpid-wm6586i-vintage-mens-cufflinks-chrysoprase-intaglio-14k-gold-1.jpg.jpegFD290WHT_b_11

Now if your looking to give your dress shirt a classy stylish look, go for vintage cufflinks, here we have a set of art deco emerald stone in a gold finish, they are just stunning and scream quality, add a suit or blazer your looking the business, these were only advertised at £12.00 on the net.

wpid-silk-scarf3.jpg05J05FBRN_2_normal

Now if your looking to dress up your dull brown blazer, a silk scarf is a great choice to add character and style, this classic silk scarf is in a neutral beige base colour but with a striking green and red design, it brings life to the blazer and looks amazing, the cost for this vintage piece was only £6.00

 flat-03-500x500wpid-s-l1000-1.jpg.jpeg

When it comes to waistcoat’s you very rarely see people sporting a pocket watch chain when they wear a waistcoat, a pocket watch chain is stylish also it gives your out fit a bit of bling, here we have a stylish black velvet waistcoat adding the silver pocket chain really brings it alive, what I love about this chain is the silver thob that hangs from it very retro but stylish.

Finding vintage pieces is not hard there are hundreds of websites selling vintage clothing and accessories, eBay is a great place simply put in the search bar vintage followed by what your looking for i.e. cufflinks, scarfs, on the settings change it to a world-wide search, when your on holiday find the back street stores have a good mooch about, barter have fun,  when I look for vintage I look for great cufflinks silk scarfs also pocket squares and the odd pocket watch, I love it when people say ” I like that ” I then say it’s a vintage piece they go no.

One of the best things about going vintage is having some thing no one else has, it’s all about individualism, your own style and if you choose vintage this is the style you will get, very rad but super stylish.

Who Is Looking Good At the 2015 Oscars

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, honour the best films of 2014 which takes place on February 22, every year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles beginning, it’s also a time for the stars to shine, and this is where designers get their chance to show the world how good they are, by dressing up the stars in their latest creations so lets see who shined and who bombed this year.

wpid-54ea770aa8d6884651e698a5_oscars-2015-eddie-redmayne.jpg

Eddie Redmayne again has not let us down, he shines in his Alexander McQueen Navy tuxedo, with black bow tie, the style is in a peak lapel, with a 1 button fastening, very stylish, and he went on to win the best actor Oscar.

wpid-sophie_hunter_benedict_cumberbatch.jpg

Benedict Cumberbatch went proper old school, he turned up in a stylish shawl collar white tuxedo, it was down to the detail here he got right tonight, stud fastening dinner shirt, a sleek bow tie, with a dapper black pocket square, very stylish with an old school twist.

wpid-54ea76a18a2fdf646460165d_oscars-2015-men-common.jpg

Common (Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jnr) was by far my favourite tonight, he looked amazing in his Prada Navy velvet tuxedo, he went with a white bow tie, but to finish the look he chose an eye catching silver brooch, I love velvet tuxedos right now and Common didn’t let me down tonight.

wpid-david_oyelowo.jpg

David  Oyelowo went for a less formal but still very stylish red tuxedo from Dolce & Gabbana, the style was in a shawl lapel, finished with a red bow tie and he to finished it of with a brooch too, very stylish but the Jackson five look is not some thing I’m into.

wpid-jared-leto-oscars-red-carpet-02.jpg

If you ever wondered what a Homeless guy looks like in a crap cheap tuxedo, thanks to Jared Leto we now know, what ever he was thinking or smoking it backed fired, buddy you need help.

wpid-john-travolta-oscars-2015-red-carpet.jpg

Oh my god John Travolta what were you thinking, yes he’s wearing a choker, has 50 shades of grey got to him who knows, all I wanted him to do was shout “YO DOG” get me my money, nice tuxedo beside that.

So over all 2015 Oscars have been stylish and sharp suited, just a couple of lunatics this years, a very well done to Eddie Redmayne for winning best Oscar .

Looking Swanky And Dapper In A Velvet Blazer

Velvet is a very old stylish material, Velvet is a type of woven fabric with a short dense pile, giving it that unique velvet feel, it can be made from natural or manmade fibres, years ago only people of nobility wore velvet garments, it was worn by kings in the middle east before trade routes opened up, once trade routes opened up spices and fine fabrics found their way in to Europe, most of it found its way to Italy, soon European  weavers were making their type of velvet weaves, there are hundreds of pictures of kings and queens wearing swanky velvet garments, velvet garment has a unique way of shimmering due to its unique make, but as times changes so does fashion velvet became less fashionable, over the next couple of hundred years velvet was used more for special occasions like weddings or Christening’s, but real gentlemen would love to wear a smoking jacket when at home.

481172_mrp_in_l

Navy Blue velvet tuxedo jacket in a smoking jacket style

The smoking jacket was really the first velvet casual jacket, but you didn’t wear it out you wore it in the house, the classic smoking jacket is a mid thigh-length jacket made from velvet, silk, or both. It has a shawl collar and turn-up cuffs and toggle or button fastenings, or may simply be closed with a tie belt. smoking jackets are still worn to this day, one guy who’s always wearing one is Hugh Hefner creator of playboy, Fred Astaire was buried in his dapper chap to the end.

imagesVWY3NUFW

The Moody Blues were famous for their crushed velvet suits and jackets they wore on stage

But during the 60s crushed velvet and frilly collars and cuffs became fashionable, a lot of young designers were graduating from the Royal College of Art and London College of Fashion, rents were dirt cheap on Kings road and Carnaby street for simple shops, soon boutiques were opening all  over the place, in the early 60s Edwardian style was in fashion, people like the moody blues were soon seen wearing blue velvet trousers very nice, but by the mid sixty’s velvet was out in was more street style jeans and T-shirts

untitledoiujn

Austin Powers wearing his swinging sixty’s velvet shagging outfit

Over the last couple of decades the Velvet blazer has been lampooned, Mike Myers dressed his character Austin Powers wearing a velvet suit with frilly cuffs, shagging his way through the 60s then again in our time, another guy that didn’t do the velvet blazer any favours was Liberace, he was an American pianist and entertainer who dressed up in lets just say very poncy outfits that scared young kids, so by the late 90s velvet blazers were not cool at all thanks to these jokers.

nmm

Giorgio Armani wearing a super plush black velvet blazer

But then Giorgio Armani came to its rescue, he redesign it and gave it a stylish twist, soon the velvet blazer was making appearances on the red carpet, one of the people bringing the velvet blazer back into the lime light is Eddie Redmayne he wore a black one at the 2015 Golden Globes then a navy blue one at the 2015 Baftas, so the velvet blaze is back in vogue people, its time to shine and look dapper with a stylish twist.

The velvet blazer is some thing that can be worn for formal or dress down it’s not just for night at the theatre,  normally I find some images to give you some ideas in how to wear this swanky piece, but what I’ve done today using the same blazer is given you three looks, because it`s all about adapting your wardrobe for every day use and that’s what you can do with a velvet blazer.

untitledbtimagesW7ZFVZ2F

495214_mrp_in_lproductimage-picture-black-knit-tie-285_jpg_474x474_q85

for a smart sartorial office look I’ve chosen a black two button velvet blazer, added some plush grey flannel trousers with a classy dress shirt, then to finish this retro look I’ve gone with a black silk knitted tie, you could add a nice pocket square or a tie bar to just finish the over all look.

imagesHA6KB159imagesW7ZFVZ2F

untitledmhy

Now if you want a stylish street style look a black velvet blazer can give you that edge, I’ve gone with a simple black and white print T-shirt from Ark Angel Apparel, added some indigo black Levi`s 501 in a straight fit very classy but casual, you could add a nice silk scarf or again a nice dapper pocket square.

images9HTACOMVimagesW7ZFVZ2F

Dressing casual with a smart twist can also be achieved with a velvet blazer, here I’ve chosen a simple medium purple roll neck sweater that just looks amazing with the black velvet blazer, but the best point is it would look great with the trousers or the jeans, just add some snazzy shoes or again a pocket square or silk scarf.

The Velvet blazer has come along way, from rich toffs to 1960s long-haired free loving puffter boys , to the sartorial look it brings today, having a velvet blazer in your wardrobe will give you so many stylish looks.

Smelling Good At “A” Sniff Of The Price

Every self-respecting men should use a great cologne or aftershave, but as you know a great cologne or aftershave costs a lot of money, so smelling good every day comes at a great cost, a couple of weeks ago my friend told me how he had some Givenchy Eau De Toilette given to him as a Christmas present, he had used it nearly every day over January, sure enough it didn’t last and at nearly £50 a bottle it’s not cheap, he was thinking of getting another bottle, I said if he carried using it like he was he would spend over £600 just on cologne for the year, he said he didn’t trust cheap slap on smell’s, I said if your savvy enough you can get a every day cologne or aftershave at a good price that does smell good, then keep his Givenchy for going out or special occasions, he asked me to prove this, lets just say it was not as easy as I thought.

As you know you can’t smell things on the web, so I had to hit the shops god I ended up smelling like a puffs bathroom, what I went looking for was some thing that was a cologne or Eau De Toilette as the oil content would be stronger, I wanted some thing that was a every day splash on, not too strong but masculine, I set a budget of just £5.00 a bottle as this was coming out of my arse pocket, I ended up hitting boots , pound stretcher, home bargains, and other budget stores, the choices are amazing and lets just say there are loads of crap out there, after going through 12 different bottle of various men’s fragrances, I chose four and each of these comes with a body spray too.

th

The first one to past muster was Jovan Musk 1973 cologne, I chose this due to its unique masculine scent, it has a lively but fresh smell of lime, pepper, carnation, mixed with amber also exotic spices  finally to give it a true masculine smell its finished with of woods & musk, when I first put it on I was not loving it, the smell soon died down that’s where the musk took over, it soon worked with my own body giving hints of a masculine scent through the day, I did get some complements from the girls, this is not my cup of tea but I would use it as a every fragrance without a problem, to me it smells more like a bar of soap so you smell fresh and that’s what you want at the end of the day, the cost for this beast is a cool £5.50 yes I went 50p over budget, the other good thing you can get it in a body spray ideal to carry on a day out.

playboy

The next one to pass muster was Playboy London Eau De Toilette, yes the stud master label is back, this was launched in 2011, it has hints a truly refined spicy scent with great fresh notes to add depth to its personality, the top notes are galbanum, mandarin and grapefruit, the heart notes are rose, cinnamon and toscanol. And the bottom notes are cedar wood, tonka bean and Pisco brandy, I wore this to an interview I was conducting about a fashion release, the fashion designer complemented me on the scent, it does not last all day but it still lingers a little that keeps you fresh. I would keep this more for just hitting the shops or going for a coffee, the cost was £4.50 not bad hey.

Rapport-Aftershave-Spray_1

This next little number from the 1990s was my date night fragrance, yes it’s nearly 20-year-old but it’s still fresh and woody, Rapport blends precious woods such as patchouli, sandalwood and cedar with warm musk, green notes and a hint of citrus, the good thing is it lasted all day, I bumped into an old school friend he said you’re not still using Rapport Bob, its great for a casual fragrance even if your just going down to the pub, the cost was only £5.00 it came in a toiletry pack that include a can of spray double the sexiest.

untitled1

The finale entry comes from Next apparel, Next bring out new fragrances every year that are very masculine and fresh, the quality of their fragrances are vastly understated, when I go on holiday I all way buy a cheap small bottle to carry in my luggage, the prices range from £10.00 yes it double the price, I did try to keep to my budget, the Signature Gold eau de toilette is one of their best. its  rich and confident blend of decadent spices, golden woods and molten black amber, great to be worn on  beach or just chilling out at a bar in the afternoon.

so can you get great mens fragrances at reasonable prices, yes you can its just about shopping around having a sniff then taking a couple of minutes to take in the fragrance. then if you like what you smell buy it
