Buying A Suit Off The Peg Guide

When it comes to buying a Suits most men will buy a Suits of the peg, off the peg means ready to wear, not produced especially for that person, before off the peg Suits became available all suits were made bespoke which meant made to order for the wearer,  into days fashion most clothing is mass-produced, so buying a suit is very easy, but getting a suit that fits you properly is another thing, a lot of young buy a suit that they see on TV or magazines, but what they don’t understand when the designers designed these suits, they didn’t have fat Bob from Stoke On Trent in mind, no it was made for some sexy male Italian model called Gucci Gucci  who looks good in tight pants, so don’t get caught up in these silly fashion crazes, you might just end up looking rather silly and you will have wasted your money.

The first step is knowing your body size that’s your torso area not including your legs, jackets come in three sizes lengths from short, regular, long,  you may think a tall man needs a long fit wrong, his legs may be long but his torso may be short, same for short people they may have a short legs but a long torso so they may need a regular fit, the key to finding out your ideal length is putting on a jacket put your arm down to your sides, if the jacket falls below your hand it’s too long, and above too short, the final thing is the close is no good buying a jacket that doesn’t close because your to fat, the jacket should close with out creating a X shape on the front when closed, you should be able close the jacket and put two fingers behind it, if you’re a large gent please stay away from slim fit go classic style every day.

Trousers are usually more easy to get in the right fit, sizes go from 30 waist up 50 waists in some stores, you can choose from plain front or pleated, but I would go for plain front every day simple lines stylish,  when choosing your trouser length the trousers should just sit at the top of the shoes,  any longer they will look ill-fitting and cheap, if you want to get a spot on fit get some extra long or unfinished trousers, take them to a tailor and get them shortened to your length .

Sourcing your Suits is very easy but it’s about what your willing to spend, my self if you buy a suit for less than £50.00 your going to get a cheap nasty suit unless it was expensive suits that’s been  reduced, try to stay away from man-made fibres they make you sweat and when ironed they start to shine, not a good look, if any thing look for a suit that is wool or made up to 50% of wool, pattern wise to me keep it simple, go for a Navy or Grey, blacks are for funerals and charcoal is very dull, there other colours but at the end of the day its your own choice.

Matalan Harrison three piece suit

This three-piece suit comes from Matalan, its a oatmeal check design, the jacket comes in a classic two button cut, the waistcoat comes a simple classic style with a 5 button front, the trousers come in a stylish fit with a flat front, the best thing about this suit its made of 58% wool and the rest is polyester, if your looking for a stylish suit for work or just for those special occasions, this suit will see you right its stylish and looks amazing, the best thing is the suit only comes in at £116.00, a bloody steel if you ask me, Matalan don’t always come out with good suits this is a rare chance for you to get some thing that’s stylish and most of all a bargain.

Magee Dillon three-piece suit

Now if you have the money and you want a suit that looks the dogs balls, meet the Dillon navy suit from Magee, this stylish three-piece is 100% wool, the jackets features 2 slanted pockets, 2 buttons on the front, the waist coat features 3 welt pockets with a stylish peak lapel, the trousers come in stylish straight fit, the best thing about this suit you could wear the suit jacket as a blazer, even the waistcoat is stylish enough to be worn on its self.

Moss Bros

Vintage pocket square from eBay

Now you have your suit how about giving a touch of style, by adding a simple pocket square you can turn a simple suit in to a stylish piece, there are many places you can buy pocket squares, I like to wear vintage pocket squares with modern suits, the best place to find them is on eBay, if you want to keep it simple go for a classy white pocket square old school but stylish.

Classy gold skull lapel pin from eBay

Lapel pins are super chic, it’s another way of adding colour and a touch of bling to your suit, I’m not a wearer of lapel pins but I wear them now and then I like to wear them with blazers more than any thing, the best place to sort them again is eBay, you can’t lapel flower pins or jewellery ones.

I hope this blog helps you when you go looking for a suit, remember fashion is what you buy style is what you do with it, so buy a suit that fits you and most of all add some stylish accessories.

The Long Sleeve Polo Shirt Part 2

We have already talked about how the essential stylish polo shirt came into being thanks to Renny Lacoste, but we didn’t touch on the long sleeve polo shirt it’s essentially the same as a short sleeve but it comes with a longer sleeves, original long sleeve style polo’s were knitted racing jerseys, but as fashion changes so does what people wear, over the last couple decades the long-sleeved polo shirt has become more fashionable, the long-sleeved polo is a stylish alternative to a shirt, it still has a collar and a buttoned placket on the front, they can be mixed with most pieces in your wardrobe.

Harley Davidson racing jersey

When the motor bike was invented racing clothing had not been invented, there was no such thing as leather biker jackets or even T-shirts, sportsman were still expected to dress smartly, so they had to have some thing made that still had a collar, the knitted racing jersey was invented it was a simple knitted jumper with a collar and a small placket, you can still find some examples but they are very rare now, over the next couple of decades better racing clothing appeared, people wore racing jerseys less and less, but once the modern polo shirt was invented people wanted more casual clothing more than ever, during the 50s Jazz singers were often seen in knitted polo shirts in vibrant colours and patterns, today you can get them in light stretched cotton or a rich cashmere.

Gabicci vintage knitted Mod inspired polo shirt

Long sleeve polo shirts are a must for any stylish young man, they really come into their own during the cold months, people can still dress casually but keep warm, and if you wanted to dress up all you need is a stylish blazer and some indigo jeans, one of my favourite long sleeve polo’s is made by John Smedley Matthew in a fine merino wool, the key to wearing a stylish long sleeve polo is matching them with complementing stylish pieces.

For years Mods loved to wear stylish clothing, so when it came to stylish clothing the long sleeve polo was an automatic choice, most clubs had a dress code which was collar and tie, but with the onset of the fashionable long sleeve polo with it stylish collar and button placket, the rules were relaxed the long sleeve polo became the choice for all stylish Mods, matching them with a pair of stylish Relco Sta Pressed Trousers in a prince of Wales check pattern, will give you a stylish but classy look.

I like this picture the guys used a simple linen scarf in a darker grey than his polo shirt, he wearing stone jeans with two-tone canvas pumps, but to give his out fit a stylish street look he gone for a black beanie .

What Knit Wear Should A Man Own

Knit wear is essential for every mans wardrobe, knit wear comes in many different styles & colours, a lot of young stylish men tend to wear sweat tops or hoodies, but what they don’t realise is that they wont be young and funky for ever, it’s also true people judge you by what you wear, so if you wear more stylish grown up clothing your more likely to get further in life, knit wear is one of the oldest forms of clothing in history, man learned to knit before weaving machines were invented, in the 1900s knit wear was used for cycling sports wear they were called racing jerseys, knit wear was never worn as every day clothing, it took the first World War for knit wear to be excepted as casual attire, in the 1920s it became stylish to wear a cream or white V-neck cricket jumpers knitted with the club colours into the neck with blazers, by the 60s there was an even bigger demand for casual knit wear, during the 60s every fashion label included knit wear in their collections, today all fashion apparel labels continue to included stylish knit wear in their collections, so what knit wear should you have in your wardrobe I hear you asking !.

Penguin V-neck lambs wool sweater

Sweaters are the most common form of knit wear that men buy, you can get them in a crew neck or V-neck, they come in many different materials like lambs wool or cashmere, styles range from plain knit, purl knit, even cable knit, style wise there are many amazing patterns to choose from but the classic has got to be Argyle pattern, its famous for being worn as a golf jumper, a lot of people ask me if they should wear crew neck with jeans or trousers, my rule of thumb is crew neck with jeans and V-neck with formal trousers.

Cream cricket tank

Sleeveless sweaters also nick named tank tops are not as common as sweaters but they are still very stylish, you can get  them in a crew or V-neck too, one of my favourite types of sleeveless jumpers are cricket knit wear in a stylish cream with a colour full knitted  neck line, they are also stylish during the warmer months, they look stylish with trousers or jeans even chinos, they to also come in many different styles and fabrics, one of the best stylish looks with a sleeveless sweater is pairing it with tweed blazer in a V-neck.

Black merino wool roll-neck jumper

Roll neck sweaters are one of my favourites they are also called turtle necks or polo neck sweaters, the origins are not quit clear where this design came from, but they have been worn by fishermen and the British navy, a roll-neck is essentially a sweater but with a close-fitting round high collar that folds over, they became stylish in France due to French philosophers wearing them, they became a hit in the US as a part of the preppy style amongst students, roll-necks became famous for bucking the trend where men went to restaurants  wearing this item in stead of a tie, they also make the wearer look very masculine, you can wear a roll-neck for work and then afterwards slip on a blazer and make it look very dressy.

RRL Shawl collar heavy cotton cardigan

Shawl neck cardigans are very stylish they usually come in a heavy knit, they have been worn for years as stylish pieces, they were made famous by people like Steve McQueen, it gets its name from its collar that’s rolled with lapel that’s in all in one piece that curves from the back of the neck down to the front closure, they are essential during the winter months, there are many different styles & colours to choose from, the most common style is the cable knit with leather football buttons, the stylish shawl cardigan looks great with a oxford shirt and some indigo Levi`s 501s.

Men’s waffle cardigan

The V-neck cardigan is another type of knitted garment, it gets its name from a James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, he wore a knitted waistcoat during the Crimean war, a cardigan is like a sweater the only difference is it has an opening on the front usually with buttons but some have stylish toggles on the front, the cut and design creates a V-neck shape that’s very chic and stylish, they also come in many different materials and patterns, they are great for creating a sartorial layering effect. cardigans are more stylish in plain colours and patterns but you can choose what you want.

Charles Wilson Clothing

With knit wear you can choose many different types of wool from thick wool  for cold months to light wool for the summer months, if you want some thing more luxuries you can get it.

Lambswool comes from seven months old lambs, they make very plush soft rich jumpers great for those chilly cold moths.

Shetland wool comes from the Shetland Islands, its famous for its resilient slightly coarse-textured knit wear.

Cashmere wool is one of the most luxuries wools you can get, it comes from goats in the Himalayan mountains.

Angora is another expensive wool it comes from rabbits the breed originated from France but are now bred in China.

So you now know what stylish knit wear is, and some of the major pieces you should have in your wardrobe, the question your now asking is what should I have in my wardrobe, to me you should have at least five pieces in your wardrobe and they are.

  • Two sweaters in a V-neck or crew neck the colours I would choose is medium grey and a navy both are neutral colours and would look good with jeans or trousers.
  • V-neck cardigan in a stylish black this is a great piece to wear to the office, and you can wear it under a blazer giving you a classy layering look.
  • A classy sleeveless sweater in a vivid colour like an electric purple, a tank can be worn with a oxford shirt then add some dressy chinos finished off with a bow tie you have the preppy look.
  • The final piece that you need is the stylish Shawl neck cardigan, they are truly the most stylish piece of knit wear ever invented, if you want to dress down, you simply wear a T-shirt and some indigo jeans add the shawl neck cardigan your looking stylish and dressed down.

Like with all clothing if you want to look stylish in your knit wear, you need to know how to mix it with your exciting wardrobe. so I’ve included some street style pictures to give you some ideas and food for thought.

Crew neck sweater with a camel over coat keeps is simple but classy the indigo jeans really stands out.

These sleeveless sweaters with their coloured tipping really make these piece stylish and look good with jeans or trousers.

This guys wearing a stylish V-neck cardigan with slim fit trousers the over all look is sartorial but super chic.

Cardigans don’t have to be plain this stylish piece has a stylish pink tipping on the edge it really brings this look to a different level very classy but truly stylish.

Shawl neck cardigans are my favourite knit wear, they give you a rugged masculine look to your outfit that screams stylish.

Roll-neck sweaters are super smart and a great alternative to a shirt and tie they look great with flannel trousers.

John Smedley

Well I hope I’ve given you some thing to of, having stylish knit wear is key to looking good, every man need stylish knit wear I hope my guide helps you and most of all inspires you.

The Art Of Being A True Gentleman

In today’s society there are very few gentleman left around, this is down to how people are brought up, no manners no respect, in the older days you were learnt the art of being a true gentlemen from your farther,  in today’s world the average farther is no older than 18, so how the hell are they going to teach a young man to be a gent when they never had the chance to be one themselves, about a hundred years ago only the nobility were classed as Ladies and Gentleman, but were not on about titles it’s the “art” of being a gentleman, a gentleman is a man who has good manners, usually well-educated, well-groomed, and dresses very smartly, so if your interested in being a gentlemen don’t worry, you don’t need to learn Latin, you don’t need to buy a pair a fancy duelling pistols, you don’t to buy a swish smoking jacket, it’s all about being respectful having manners and being well-groomed and dress with a touch of class,

Manners And Being Respectful

The first part of being a true gentleman is having manners and being respectful, if you ask most young men how they treat their young lady’s they shout “TREAT THEM MEAN KEEP THEM KEEN” how classy, their idea of a date is gong McDonalds getting a McSandwich then having a fumble in their crappy boy racer, so lets take a step back for one second , if your taking a young lady out you need to treat her with respect, if she is the kind of girl who drops her knickers on the first date bonk her then dumper her, but if she’s a nice girl think of a nice place you and her can meet and get to know each other, when she arrives stand up and great her with a compliment, don’t stare at her tits, don’t use cheesy pick up lines, try not to fart or belch in front of her if you need to fart be sneaky and do silent farts, let her sit down first then you sit down simple, if your going for a meal eat with your mouth shut, don’t just talk about your self and how good you are in bed, , ask things about her, this is how you wow the ladies  and make them feel good, but when your out and about you can still be a gent, if you’re at a bus stop in a queue  and a lady’s behind you let her on first, always hold a door open for a lady, these are little things that show you have manners but most of all you’re a true gentleman.

Gentleman’s Grooming

Now a proper gentleman is always well-groomed and well turned out, most young lads think a quick wash then wearing loads of expensive cologne  is the ticket, listen here you haired arsed grease balls, male grooming takes time and dedication, as we get older we get hairier in different areas, in older times a true gent would grow a huge moustache, then spend loads of money on fine oils and creams for his fine beast of a moustache, beards are back in but they are not every ones cup of tea, so the first step of male grooming is smelling good you need to invest into some type of body wash or shower gel, invest into a lime based shower gel that also cleanse your body, you then need an antiperspirants  for get about body sprays they don’t stop you sweating, next aftershave or cologne every man need to smell good, but remember when you enter the room you don’t want to blind with your aftershave, you need to be subtle simply apply to a little to your neck a little on your chest then a touch on your wrists, so when you approached some body they are greeted with mild stunning fragrance, now hair grooming no were not on about hair cuts, we are talking about nose a hair errrrrrrrr, as we get older we get more hair growing, so implement a grooming regime every three days, get some clippers and keep your nose and ears hairs in trim guys, next nails the worst thing about a man is dirty nails it puts lady’s off, no you don’t have to go a nail bar and get your nails done, buy some nail clippers and a nail brush wash your hands every day with the nail brush then keep your nails trimmed, Men`s hair this is really down to the man just keep your hairy tidy and make sure it’s washed on a regular basics.

Gentleman`s  Clothing

A well dressed gentleman is ways admired, don’t worry you don’t have to start wearing frilly shirts and three-piece tweed suits, a gentleman’s clothing is all way cleaned and pressed, but what you do need is proper smart clothing, a true gentleman would not go out for a meal wearing a Bart Simpson T-shirt, your cloths should be stylish, a simple wardrobe will keep the emphasis on you, stick to simple colours, please no neon colours you’re not a circus act,  make sure your cloths fit you correctly, when it comes to shoes a true gent keeps them clean, so invest into a proper shoe cleaning kit,

Dealing  With Altercations

Every gentleman will face some kind of altercation in his life time, from over starched shirts to burnt toast, the mark of a true gentleman is how you deal with them, gone are the days of duelling pistols, a true gent is expected to protect his lady’s honour,  so if some scum bag calls your misses a dirty whore, give him a stare then get up and offer to meet him down stairs in 10 minutes, then get your mobile phone out order a taxi and leave by the fire exit, as you leave stick your finger up to the guy and shout your mother is even dirtier, remember a true gentleman will never resort to violence but with witty one liners and guile.

But on a series note it’s not hard  being a gentleman you just need good manners and have respect and dress stylish

Weekend Travel Stylish Essentials

Its spring the long bank holidays are here that means yes “weekends” away, time to pack your weekend bag enjoy the sun and some beer, but if you’re hitting the beach you want to be looking good and stylish, it’s all about packing the right pieces that are practical but also essential, there are many times I’ve seen guys getting away for the weekend, and they are carrying too much kit, also if your going to fly to Europe you normally can only carry an on board bag, even then they check your case if you’re carrying too much aftershave they even take it off you, so you need to be smart and crafty what your carrying in your bag.

The first thing you need is a stylish weekend bag, forget about those little trolley dolly cases you wheel behind you, get a proper man`s bag that’s stylish but most of all you can get your kit in it, the best type of bag is the classic holdall, they come in leather or other materials, a classic brown or black are the classy colours, the other benefit is they have a shoulder strap, which makes it easier to carry, don’t be a pussy and wheel your case behind you, be a man and carry your case you will look stylish and masculine, I’ve chosen this Kangol antique holdall,  because of its size and striking red and navy canvas stripe stylish design, it has three pockets, a shoulder strap and handles which makes this perfect for your weekend getaway.

The polo shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you can pack for your weekend away, it looks great on the beach and if you’re hitting the clubs its bang on with the money, one of the best pieces is the Lacoste ultra slim polo shirt with tricolour piping on the collar and arm bands, it has a stylish button placket, its inspired and designed for the those weekends away.

Oxford shirts are often overlooked as some thing for the weekend, but oxford shirts look great with shorts or chinos, they are the classic playboy look on the beach matched with some snazzy Ray Ban sunglasses, with one oxford shirt you can get two outfits on a weekend end away, wear it on a night out then the next day wear it with a pair of shorts, it will be broken in a ruffled way but you will look very stylish, this oxford I’ve chosen is from Next, it’s a simple shirt made from real oxford fabric, with contrast trims and button down collar, but the good thing it only costs £20.00 not a king’s ransom.

Weekends away are all about catching some rays dressing down, so every man needs some stylish shorts, for get about sports shorts they are ok for the pool, but when you’re hitting the beach side bars you want to look stylish, go for some chinos cotton shorts in a vivid summer colour, these Faxan shorts in a deep pink come from Joules, they are a smart alternative to chinos, but most of all they look stylish with a oxford shirt or polo shirt.

When it comes to foot wear there are many different pieces to choose from, but for me its a pair of Toms Espardrilles, they slip on your feet like a pair of socks, they have a classic suede insole for comfort, a latex arch for added support, they come in a striking rust linen material, Toms even look stylish with jeans and a summer blazer, classy footwear for your weekend away.

Chinos are a must for any weekend away, great for city breaks or hitting the beach, chinos come in many colours but keep it classy go for a light tan or stone, also when you’re hitting the beach you can just roll up the legs and look stylish walking across  it, these chinos come from River Island in a slim fit in a stone colour, they have a classy button fly, they would look amazing with a blue oxford shirt.

Another piece that would not go a miss is a classy straw Trilby, they are not just stylish but also very practical, if you’re sitting by a beach bar all day you need a little protection from the sun, with this Stetson Raffia straw Trilby that’s what you get, with its stylish navy grosgrain ribbon band you will look dapper and stylish.

As you now when you get your bags checked you run the risk of being told your carrying too much toiletry’s, and then you get told to hand over a bottle of aftershave that cost you £65.00 your going to feel pissed off, you then have to go to the duty-free shop to buy more, so even before you have started your holiday your over a hundred pound out-of-pocket, so invest into some travel aftershave atomiser`s, they are about the size of a lipstick case, you simply fill them with your favourite shave, pop them into your bag, and leave your favourite aftershave at home. your sorted also they fit in your pocket, so if you want to stay fresh all day your covered guys.

Where ever you decide to travel to this year do it in style, have fun enjoy the sun and stay safe on your  travels.

Are You`re Socks Stylish !

Socks are one of the most overlooked items of clothing in a man`s wardrobe, I am a guy who always look at men’s socks, to me it shows if a guy has really taken time to think what he wearing on that day, some times a flashy pair of socks can really make your outfit sing, socks have been worn for thousands of years, the earliest socks would have been made from animal fur before man learned to knit.

These funky 12th century socks were found in Egypt

Once man learnt to knit they were able to create stunning socks, by the 1600s socks were very important dress for the nobility they would wear silk socks, where every day people wore simple wool socks, because socks were man-made each culture could personally put their own culture stamp on them and design,

In the old days boys went to school in shorts come winter or summer so they needed  knee-length socks to keep warm

By the 1900s nylon was invented and automated machines, so socks were made on a Industrial scale, with this socks became simple pieces taken for granted, but over the last couple of decades with fashion changing and people wanting to look good socks have become stylish pieces again.

Argyle pattern

The Argyle pattern is made of diamonds, the word is sometimes used to refer to an individual diamond in the design but more commonly refers to the overall pattern. Most argyle layouts contain layers of overlapping motifs, adding a sense of three-dimensionality, movement, and texture, the pattern comes from the tartan of Clan Campbell, it became stylish during the 20s, the Argyle pattern is stylish and gives you a unique look that’s bang on with the money.

Polka Dot pattern

Polka dot is a pattern consisting of an array of filled circles. early instances were generally equally sized and spaced relatively closely in relation to their diameters, many modern prints include more randomly spaced, sized and coloured dots, the key to wearing polka dot socks is choosing the pin dot polka dot pattern, polka dot socks were worn by jazz players and rhythm and blues bands, polka dots look great with grey flannel trousers.

Striped pattern

Striped pattern is made by having lengthier spans of color in the runs, causing distinctive striping patterns, strips were originally worn as sports socks, students would wear them at the university’s,  stripes are very sartorial you can have multi stripes or bold stripes, I don’t like socks with to many different stripes, I keep it simple by choosing socks with two bold colours like navy & red, yellow and navy blue, they look great with Indigo jeans.

Plain Socks

Plain socks in a striking vivid colour is always a style winner, if you’re wearing a striped suit or checked trousers you need to keep your socks plain, for get the plain grey or black they belong to the bin of dull, you need to add classy colours like bold reds, light pinks, sky blue, electric purple.

Natural wool socks

Socks come in many materials most common is polyester but its manmade, so it cause your feet to sweat more as the material cant breath, wear wool or mohair they are natural materials, they keep your feet warm and cool naturally so your feet wont sweat as bad.

Now you know your different patterns its time to see how you can incorporate them into your every day wardrobe, to look good in stylish socks it’s all about matching colours and patterns to what you’re wearing.

The Argyle pattern may be hundreds of years old but it’s still stylish and very chic.

Polka dot style socks look great with jeans or trouser but stick with pin dot more stylish.

Striped socks are very sartorial they look amazing with plain chinos worn with brogues.

Plain coloured socks are very stylish in vivid colours, they can brighten up a dull suit or give your outfit a classy finish.

Their was a time when I only wore black socks, but now I love stylish socks they are key to my style and how I want to look.

Peaky Blinders Style

In September 2013 the BBC brought us Peaky Blinders, it was their answer to Americas Broad Walk Empire, a stylish 1920s gangster TV series, it was based in Birmingham,  the gang yes was called  Peaky Blinders headed by Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) , It soon gained rave reviews I had not seen at this point, but a friend commented on the sharp suits they wore on the programme, so being a follower of fashion and style I was interested, I got a dvd copy slipped it on I was met with Nick Cave singing the theme song “Red Right Hand”, then Cillian Murphy then appeared riding a big black horse dressed in a three-piece tweed herringbone suit, with a white pressed penny collar shirt but with no tie just a gold stud, then to finish the look dressed in a classy baker boy eight panel cap with a button in the middle, I was hooked not just by the story but by the clothes they were stylish, they were items of clothing you could wear today, the costumes were designed by Stephanie Collie, to recreate the era she didn’t want to do a history lesson in period clothing, the costumes were made and hired to accurate 1920 style,  but the trousers given a more stylish fit, the suits were made by Keith Watson he’s been making suits since the 60s he started off in Savile Row, this is where he learnt his trade, the best thing is the cast loved their suites you can see this in how they move and wear their suits on set.

Thomas Shelby from Peaky Blinders ( played by Cillian Murphy )

The best thing about the Peaky Blinders look is anyone can put it together and wear the same outfits, the cloths and accessories used on set wouldn’t look that out-of-place today,  after all the men are only wearing tweed suits and flat caps, classy over coats, this look has inspired young fashionistas  to incorporate the vintage look into their wardrobe, so I want to take you through a couple of pieces and show you how this look would look stylish in your own wardrobe.

In Peaky Blinders most of the characters wear tweed suits, this is what most suites were made from at this time, most men would have owned one suit at a push two, the Thomas Shelby character has may be more, in one scene he is seen wearing a grey pin striped suit, but his main suit is a three-piece grey herringbone suit with a notch lapel and high wasted trousers with short legs with turn ups, getting a three-piece tweed suit is not easy but if you shop around you can find them, I’ve chosen the Marc Darcy tweed three-piece suit because it doesn’t break the bank, also with the felt black collar it gives it a modern twist.

In Peaky Blinders all the characters are seen wearing beautiful starched white starched collars, in the 1920s shirts didn’t come with collars you would attach the collar to the shirt with studs, in the 1920s men didn’t have a lot of money to buy cloths so they normally they would have a two starched collars and one shirt, this way they could keep the shirt going all week nice, today a lot of shops don’t stock starch collars but you will find them in vintage shops, in Peaky Blinders Thomas Shelby is seen wearing a wine striped shirt also a blue striped one but my favourite is the powder blue one with the contrast of the white-collar it looks amazing with a grey herringbone tweed suit, the style your looking for is the penny collar, this shirt from Tesco does not break the bank but looks stylish.

The Henley shirt is a stylish piece worn as underwear  on the set by many characters, it looks amazing when worn with braces and tweed trouser finished off with a tweed cap, the Henley shirt gets its name from when rowers in Henley-on-Thames wore them to race in, there are a lot of company’s making the Henley shirt, but to me there is only one company who make a proper Henley Shirt that is Wolsey, their Henley shirt is made from 100% cotton, in a loose fit, with a five button placket and ribbed cuff

Another feature of the Peaky Blinders is the long black overcoats they wear, they are big and loose-fitting very masculine in style, when the character’s done theirs coats and walk on seen they look very menacing in deed, the style your looking for is a simple over coat that just hangs off your shoulders but fits you in the sleeves, I’ve chosen this black over coat from Warrior Clothing, its made from 100 % wool with a stunning red lining you can’t go wrong with this stunning coat.

The crowing glory of the Peaky Blinders look is the eight panel tweed cap with a peak at the front and a button in the middle, the caps have many names like the Gatsby, The baker boy, the newspaper boy, it was a type of head wear worn by dock workers and other manual workers of the time, in Peaky Blinders they had sewn razor blades into the peaks of their caps, then used them as weapons, this how they got their name Peaky Blinders, Baker boy caps to me are the most stylish casual head wear you can own.

If you wear a waistcoat wear it with a pocket watch

The final piece to the Peaky Blinders look is the pocket watch, Thomas Shelby is always seen with a pocket watch hanging off his waistcoat, before the wrist watch was invented all men wore a pocket watch it would be attached to their waistcoat by a gold chain, the more stylish chains would have a fob attached to the chain, to me a pocket watch is a great way to add a touch of style to your waistcoat, don’t go out and buy a new watch get your self a vintage one, ebay is a great place to get them.

Peaky Blinders is truly a unique programme very stylish as well as entertaining, cant wait for series three just hope the guys are still stylishly dressed.

The Stylish Trilby

The Trilby is seriously stylish for 2015, there was a time when every man wore some kind of hat, now you very rarely see a man in a hat, the Trilby its self is a narrow-brimmed hat where a Fedora has a wider brim, it gets its name from the stage adaptation of George du Maurier`s 1894 novel “Trilby”, a hat was worn during the production of this style so it was called yes the Trilby, a Trilby is usually made from felt but you can also get them in tweed , straw, wool, the Trilby like most hats became less fashionable by the late 50s, during the 60s a new music movement emerged called Ska, it was a mixture of American jazz and rhythm and blues, it was listened to by a subculture called rude boys, they would wear sharp suits and Trilby hats, but by the time the 70s came the Trilby became less fashionable again.

The Classic Blues Brothers Jake and Elwood wearing their famous Trilby`s and sunglasses

The Trilby hit new heights during the 80s one of the main reasons was the Blues Brothers, it was a film about Jake and Elwood Blues, they were lead singers in the rhythm and blues band, they were dressed in Trilby`s and sunglasses through the whole of the film, this gave the Trilby a new lease of life, designers started to design new outfits including the  Trilby as a part of their design, soon lady’s were sporting Trilby`s too it became a unisex hat, but as a fashion accessory for  young stylish men it didn’t take off.

Bruno Mars looking uber cool in his Trilby

Over the latest couple of decades vintage has become back into fashion, one of the reasons is young musicians and rappers like Pharrell Williams, Andre 3000, Mos Def, Bruno Mars, Common, all these guys have dumped the base-ball cap and jeans hanging off their asses, they dress in the latest suits also dapper Fedoras and Trilby`s, this new love of vintage style has inspired a whole new generation in to wear the Trilby again.

The most common Trilby is made from felt, felt is a textile that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibres together, felt can be made of natural fibres such as wool or synthetic fibres, the finished product is truly stylish and practical, it’s normally decorated with a plain silk hat band, and a stunning natural feather plume.

The tweed Trilby is not as common as felt, tweed is a rough, unfinished woollen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is made in either plain or twill weave and may have a check or herringbone pattern, this style of Trilby is usually worn by women instead of men.

The straw Trilby is a classy choice for summer, it’s simply woven out of straw or reeds, it’s designed to protect the head from the sun and heatstroke, a classy straw Trilby hat is usually fitted with a stunning colour full hat band.

Trilby`s are real classy if you can pull it off, but its all about what you wear with the Trilby, if you’re wearing a felt Trilby normally a nice waistcoat and some indigo jeans look best, if you’re sporting a straw Trilby a nice oxford shirt and some chinos is the ticket.

For a cracking summer look go for a blue oxford shirt, some white Ralph Lauren shorts, add some Fred Perry white pumps, then some classy Ray Bans and a dapper straw Trilby.

Trilby`s give any out fit a classy stylish look, here Usher go’s for double denim then a V neck French blue T-shirt, to finish the look he goes for a grey Trilby, the over all look is very casual but stylish.

Buying a stylish Trilby does not have to cost you a lot of money, an average stylish straw Trilby should only cost you about £10 to £15, felt Trilby`s are a little more expensive but you can still pick up a stylish one for a little as £20 but you can pay well over a £100 for some top name ones, my favourite place for buying a Trilby is Ebay, I always do a world-wide search when searching on Ebay.

Trilby hats are very stylish,  but if you want to make your Trilby even more stylish try these assorted feathers, each pack comes with six different feathers, featuring vibrant and unique color combinations. Simply slide the feather behind the hat band, and you’ll have the new look you’ve been waiting for.

Trilby`s can get dirty very quick so every stylish man needs a hat cleaning kit, to maintain the quality and appearance of your stylish Trilby, in this kit you get a felt hat sponge and brush, then to protect your hat from water stains you get a can of felt hat protector spray, and to keep the hat in shape a low profile hat stand.

Trilby`s are super stylish and have a place in every mans wardrobe, a lot of men feel uncomfortable wearing hats,so invest into a cheap straw one for summer, wear it if you like the look invest into some more.

The Mod Style Essentials

The Mod subculture started in the 1960s, it has gone through many revivals and carries on today, the Mods were all about fashion and music, the Mod movement started off on London in the late 50s but its height was during the 60s, Mods were modernist`s they were all about the latest fashion and music, it attracted young working class lads, there style was all about bespoke sharp suits, and sharp dressing, at the weekends mods would meet a cafes and listen to music looking good, band`s like the Small Faces and The Who were influenced by the Mod subculture, Mods were known for fighting with rockers, Mods favourite mode of transport was the scooter they chose Lambrettas and Vespas, there was a couple of reasons why they chose scooters, one was because the engine was encased in two side panels this stopped them getting oil over their fancy cloths, the other was because they were affordable and young lads could get the newly available higher purchase plans, and this is where the iconic Mod parka came in they wore them to protect cloths while riding their scooters, but by the mid 60s the Mod scene became to commercialised, their was company’s setting up Mod clothing collections, this went against what Mods were all about choosing their own style, it became to stylised instead of young people customising their own cloths.

Mods on their Scooters

Over the last couple of decades the Mod subculture has gone through many revivals, in the 80s the classic film about Mods Quadrophenia  was made, in the early 90s bands like Oasis ,Blur, The Verve, were all influenced by the Mod subculture through their music and style, today the Mod subculture has spread to places like Japan even south Korea, Mod clothing brands like Lambretta  and Merc still sell Mod style clothing to this day.

Mod fishtail parka is one of the most iconic items of clothing associated with the Mod subculture, the original parkers were never meant for young  stylish Mods, they were made for the US army, so their troops could fight in cold climates, that’s what happened in the Korean war in the 1950s, it was a united nations war so Britain had to take part, but British troops were not equipped for the cold climate so America issued them with the fishtail parka, the name fishtail parka comes from the coat is shaped like a fishtail, this was so the coat could be tied around the legs for added wind proofing,  after the war hundreds found their way into army surplus stores, Mods first used them as an ideal garment for fending off the elements and protecting their smart clothing from grease and dirt, but soon they became apart of the Mod look with Mods sewing on badges and the iconic roundel on the back of their parka`s, it’s very hard to find original parka`s now with the fur hood, but company’s like Merc London continue to make this classic as close to the original as possible, but you can’t get a fur hood now because of an outcry by the fur lobby, but you can get a synthetic fur hood.

The original Mods were influenced by modern jazz, jazz came from America when jazz players came to the UK they wore fancy sharp shirts made by Brooks Brothers, very soon young modernist were looking for these shirts, because the shirts had to be imported certain importers were able to corner the market so the shirts became very expensive, one Man Ben Sherman saw a market for his own shirts, he quickly designed his own oxford shirts made from the finest cottons, he targeted the young mods soon his shirts were hit, among these were his Gingham and paisley shirts, to this day Ben Sherman continue make the finest casual shirts influenced by the Mod subculture.

In the late 50s young stylish mods were looking for stylish casual clothing, one of the items they chose was the polo shirts, the brand they chose was the Fred Perry polo, the main reason was Mods loved to dance all night but still look good, the Fred Perry polo shirt came with a collar and placket so it could be worn with a suit, because of its knitted piquaterial and its ability to retain its shape, Mods could dance all night in it then wear it again the next day, very soon suppliers were getting requests from streetwear fans for tipping on the collars and cuffs, Fred Perry loved the idea he gave his permission this design to made, it gained a nick name the Perry, since then Fred Perry has been heavily associated with the Mods and its music scene.

Another classic that mods chose was the Sta Prest Trousers, they were originally invented and produced by Levi Strauss & Co, they were a wrinkle resistant trouser renowned for their sharp style and straight leg, also they came in a flat front, they were a practical trouser that looked good but also after being worn on a scooter for a couple of hours they still looked sharp and classy, Levi`s no longer make the Sta Prest trousers, but company’s like Relco and Warrior make a similar trousers called Sta Press trouser, they are still worn by young stylish men today.

Desert boots were the first casual shoes to be invented for casual wear, they were invented by Nathan Clark of Clarks shoes, he was serving in the second world war in Africa wear soldiers first wore desert boots, he came back to the UK designed his own boot, by the late 50s they became a casual classic, mods loved them for their simple straight lines and design, but one of the main reasons was the crepe sole its naturally gripped the road when riding their scooters, deserts boots have been copied by every fashion label going but the originals are by Clarks only.

There are many other pieces that Mods are famous for like Harrington Jackets and Ox blood tasselled loafers, the Mod cultures lives on with weekend scooter rally’s, and Mod music by the Jam and Paul Weller, open up your mind add a little Mod culture your wardrobe.

Looking Stylish In Tartan

Tartan is very fashionable and stylish, more designers are now using tartan in their designs more than ever before, tartan its self is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours, which is made from wool, but it’s now made from many different type of materials, tartan is heavily associated with Scotland and kilts,  tartan is called plaid in America, in 1746 tartan was outlawed to bring warrior clans under government control, tartan is now the symbolic national dress of Scotland.

a lot of people think each clan had its own tartan this is not the truth, the highlands tartan are really associated with regions and districts, tartan was produced by local weavers using natural dyes available in that area, the patterns were different, people chose what colours they wanted like people today when they go cloths shopping, it was not till the late 19th century that many patterns were created then associated with clans of the highlands.

When Scottish regiments were formed in the British army they had their own tartan designed for them, each regiment like all British regiments had their own customs and certain dress uniforms, one of the most famous was the Black watch their tartan was also known as the black watch tartan, many men served in the Scottish regiment, in time these men left the army and some emigrated to places like Canada, Australia, America, even Europe, they took with them their tartan kilts, which would have been worn on remembrance days, very soon these tartans inspired many designers.

Black Watch tartan

The Black watch tartan is one of the most used by designers, it gets it name from the dark colours of the tartan, its consists of blue, black, green top check then a blue, black, green, black, blue under check, this allows the opposite blues to carry a different check, the effect is stunning but stylish, this is why I’ve chosen this tartan, you can get many stunning pieces in Black watch tartan.

This stylish field jacket from Mackintosh in Black Watch tartan, is crafted in the UK from  showerproof waxed cotton bolstered with supple oiled leather, this handsome tartan piece is practical and stylish, it’s a part of the Mr Porter Kingsmen collection, it would look great with roll-neck sweater and some brogue boots.
